MICRODERMABRASION
Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure which gently resurfaces the skin. Microdermabrasion exfoliation is performed with a diamond tip which brushes the skin’s surface with the aid of a gentle vacuum. This action removes dead and damaged cells at the skin’s surface. By eliminating these surface cells with microdermabrasion, the skin is left soft and supple while forcing the regeneration of new skin cells. Microdermabrasion at Dermedix Clinic is combined with a complete facial which includes treatment creams, a mask, high frequency and extractions if necessary.
What to expect after a microdermabrasion treatment
After a microdermabrasion treatment, the skin may feel tight. Some individuals experience light flaking of the skin, that is why it is important to use a good moisturizer as advised by our skin therapists. Otherwise there are minimal side effects, which is why microdermabrasion is often described as the lunch hour procedure.
Depending on the condition of your skin, our skin therapists may advise multiple treatments and/or combining microdermabrasion with Chemical peels, Photo Rejuvenation, and Laser Facial treatments for optimal results. Microdermabrasion facials are usually kept at 2-3 week intervals and maintenance treatments are usually performed once a month. Microdermabrasion treatments are approximately 45 minutes in length.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Approximately every 28 days we create a new layer of skin. As new cells form they push their way to the surface. As we age this process slows down leading to the appearance of older skin with less radiance. If the skin does not shed properly, dead cells settle on the surface causing clogged pores, a bumpy uneven texture, breakouts and a dull appearance.
Microdermabrasion treatment will result in smoother, brighter skin, with a reduction in brown pigmentation, age spots, fine lines, mild acne scars, and refined pores. It can also help improve the clogged pores of mild acne, especially those with whiteheads and blackheads. It stimulates the growth of new collagen so skin appears thicker and firmer.
Men and women of any skin type or colour. Anyone with aged, congested, flaky, dry, devitalized, thickened, blemished, dull and sun damaged skin will experience a rejuvenated and refreshed complexion. Blotchiness, uneven skin tones and texture will also be improved.
Areas that are usually treated include the face, neck, chest, shoulders, back, arms and hands.
The actual treatment usually takes 15-40 minutes, depending on the area. The treatment is applied after cleansing the skin and a moisturizing sun block is applied following treatment.
A series of about 6 sessions, 2-4 weeks apart is recommended.
Before a special event, microdermabrasion may be done as a single treatment to give instantly smooth, glowing skin. Since it is milder than a light chemical peel, there is no recovery time and regular activities may be resumed immediately after the treatment.
Both microdermabrasion and chemical peels exfoliate the skin however they do so by different means. Microdermabrasion removes the top layer with the use of a diamond tip that brushes the skin. Chemical peels are exfoliating the skin as well with the use of an acid such as glycolic, salicyclic or a peel blend which penetrates different depths of the skin. For someone who wants a light skin exfoliation without excessive skin peeling, microdermabrasion is a great option.
Skin microdermabrasion may be used with other anti-aging procedures such as chemical peels, intense pulsed light (IPL or BBL), Botox and injectable fillers.
